Empowering Service

In my first few months in this role, I have had the privilege to visit about half of our member hospitals and health systems. (If I haven’t been to your hospital, I’ll be there soon!)

As I meet with our incredible CEOs, doctors, nurses, and the talented teams that help our hospitals run efficiently and effectively, I am so impressed by your commitment to your communities.

It is with that background that I took the opportunity to speak last week with D. Paul Monteiro, Jr., Maryland Secretary of Service & Civic Innovation, at MHA’s offices.

We discussed the Maryland Corps/Service Year Option program—an innovative program launched by Gov. Wes Moore’s administration.

The Maryland Corps/Service Year Option program provides Maryland residents with a unique opportunity for professional development and community service. Participants receive job training, mentorship, and a salary of at least $15 per hour, with the chance to earn $6,000 towards tuition or as a cash stipend upon successful completion.

I spoke with Secretary Monteiro about the opportunities for our hospital and health system members to become host sites. The first deadline to become a host site for the program is approaching on May 1, with additional cohorts to follow.

Governor Moore’s prioritization of service as a hallmark of his administration is commendable, and I am proud that our state is leading the way—investing in our workforce and the future of our state.

Together, let’s continue to make a positive impact on our community and build a brighter future for all Marylanders. For more information about this program and how you and your hospital can get involved, watch the video below and visit serve.maryland.gov.
