Accountant

The Association is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Accountant to join the Finance team in Elkridge, MD. This critical role is designed for an experienced accountant with a strong foundation in accounting principles and practices. Reporting to the Accounting Director, the Accountant will play a pivotal role in managing the month-end close process, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, and providing support for our annual external audit. In addition to these core responsibilities, the role will encompass a range of routine accounting duties, including maintaining general ledger integrity, performing account reconciliations, preparing journal entries, and assisting with financial forecasting and budgeting. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Month-End Close: Lead the month-end close process, including the preparation of journal entries, accruals, and adjustments. Ensure that financial transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled within the close timeframe.
  • Account Reconciliation: Perform regular account reconciliations, ensuring the integrity of general ledger balances. Investigate and resolve discrepancies, ensuring that all balances are accurate and in compliance with company policies.
  • Fixed Assets Accounting: Manage the company’s fixed assets, ensuring proper capitalization, depreciation, and amortization in accordance with accounting standards and company policy.
  • Journal Entries: Prepare and post journal entries, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with internal policies.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets. Provide variance analysis and commentary for management on financial performance.
  • Accounting Software: Utilize accounting software to enter, monitor, and analyze financial data accurately and efficiently.
  • Audit Assistance: Support the external audit process by preparing necessary documentation, workpapers, and reconciliations. Assist in addressing auditor inquiries and ensuring timely completion of audit procedures.
  • Payroll: Support the organization as a back-up for time card and payroll processing.
  • Ad hoc Projects: Support additional finance-related projects and initiatives as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong background in month-end close, financial reporting, and audit support.

Qualifications:

  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in accounting software (experience with Great Plains or Business Central is a plus.)
    • Intermediate Excel skills and a strong ability to work with spreadsheets and financial data.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Attention to Detail: Excellent accuracy and thoroughness in managing financial data.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear reporting and team collaboration.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality of all sensitive information and adhere to company data privacy and security policies.
