3. Work AHEAD: State, Federal Officials Finalizing Terms of New Hospital System in Maryland

State and federal officials are finalizing the terms of an agreement to usher in a new hospital payment system in Maryland to replace the one set to expire at the end of the year. The state’s hospital-rate setting commission gave an overview Wednesday of some of the terms laid out in a future agreement with federal officials to transition the state into a federal program called the States Advancing All-Payer Health Equity Approaches and Development, or AHEAD, model.

Catherine Maloney, a longtime executive at Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare, will take over as president of the Annapolis institution in late September, according to an announcement Monday. She will also serve as chief operating officer and executive vice president for Luminis Health. Maloney was chosen after a nationwide search and will replace Sherry B. Perkins, who is retiring after leading AAMC for six years.

GBMC HealthCare has tapped Dr. Paari Gopalakrishnan, an executive with experience turning around a struggling New England hospital as its next CEO. Dr. Gopalakrishnan will assume the role in September, taking over from longtime CEO Dr. John Chessare, the Baltimore County health system announced Wednesday.

MedStar Health recently unveiled a new biomechanics research facility called the Innovation in Motion Laboratory (IMO Lab). IMO Lab uses advanced technology to track a person’s movement. Doctors believe this technology will improve patient care.
