Proposed Rate Hikes for Long-Term Care Plans Would Double Premiums for Thousands of Seniors

About 12,600 Maryland seniors could face significant increases in long-term care insurance premiums if state regulators approve rate hikes requested by four insurers, with proposed increases ranging from about 40% to more than 240% depending on the company and policy. Insurers cite higher-than-expected benefit use and longer policyholder lifespans, while consumer advocates warn the increases could put substantial pressure on retirees who have paid into these policies for decades; the Maryland Insurance Administration is reviewing the requests and may approve lower increases.
